Why the gauge swatch still matters

Two yarns can look similar on their labels and behave differently once worked. Make a generous sample, wash it as you will wash the finished project and measure it only after drying.

Is matching the yarn weight category enough?

No. Categories are broad. Compare length per weight and gauge too, then confirm the fabric with a washed swatch.

Why does the calculator add a safety margin?

A small margin helps cover swatching, variations in personal gauge and minor pattern modifications. You can set it from 0% to 20%.

Can I substitute a different fibre?

Sometimes, but the garment may have different stretch, warmth, drape and care needs. Treat the result as a warning system, not a guarantee.
